Census 2027: Housing Enumeration Begins in Five States Including Delhi

New Delhi, May 17: The first phase of the nationwide Census 2027 has commenced, with housing enumeration and counting (HLO) activities starting in five states, including the capital, New Delhi. Additionally, self-enumeration has been launched in four states as of Sunday.

The states where the housing counting (HLO) fieldwork has begun include Rajasthan, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi (MCD area). Meanwhile, housing enumeration has already been underway in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Uttarakhand.

Self-enumeration (SE) facilities have also been introduced in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Puducherry, available until May 31. The fieldwork for housing enumeration in these states will take place from June 1 to June 30.

In Uttar Pradesh, the self-enumeration facility is ongoing and will continue until May 21. Following that, housing enumeration fieldwork will be conducted from May 22 to June 20.

Previously, from April 16 to May 15, housing enumeration and counting activities were successfully completed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, and Sikkim, as well as in the NDMC and Cantonment Board areas of Delhi.

The newly introduced self-enumeration facility has received an encouraging response from the public. Over 14.4 million families have completed self-enumeration through the official portal across 25 states. This initiative marks a significant step towards digitizing the census process, allowing residents to participate conveniently and securely.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged those who have completed self-enumeration to keep their self-enumeration ID safe and share it with the officials who will visit their homes to complete the HLO process. Families that have not participated in self-enumeration will be included by survey officials through door-to-door visits.

Notably, Census 2027 is being conducted using digital methods for the first time, while traditional door-to-door enumeration will continue to ensure comprehensive and accurate coverage. During field visits, enumerators (survey officials) are collecting data digitally through a specialized mobile application.
