Chennai, May 17: The India Meteorological Department has announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has indicated that due to the existing weather system over the Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days.
Following the much-needed rain in several areas of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, the weather department issued a new alert for heavy rainfall in five districts on Sunday.
According to the meteorological department, a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is influencing the weather, leading to the likelihood of continued rainfall activities for at least the next three days.
Officials have reported that moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in the interior and western regions of Tamil Nadu due to this weather system. The districts of Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Nilgiri are expected to experience heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is also possible in Karur, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), and Shivaganga districts on Monday.
Officials have warned that during the rainfall, gusty winds could reach speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour in some areas. Residents in the affected districts are advised to stay alert and follow updates issued by the meteorological department.
Light rain is also expected in Chennai and its suburban areas during the day. While widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated in the city, overcast skies and intermittent rain may provide some relief from the rising heat.
In light of the adverse weather conditions, the meteorological department has also issued warnings to fishermen, advising them to avoid several maritime areas.
Strong winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour are likely in coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu, including the Gulf of Mannar, the Kanyakumari sea region, the Andaman Sea, and parts of the southern Bay of Bengal. Authorities have urged fishermen and residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety guidelines until the weather stabilizes.
