Organized under the auspices of World Yoga Asana, the championship aims to bring together the best players from around the globe. The official selection trials for the Indian National Yoga Asana Team were held on May 1 and 2 at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Sonipat, Haryana.
As part of the preparations, athletes competed in various categories, including traditional, artistic, rhythmic, and athletic yoga asanas. Selected players will now participate in a national coaching camp at the Narayanpura Sports Complex in Ahmedabad from May 10 to June 2.
On this occasion, Udit Seth, President of Yoga Asana India, stated, “Hosting the World Yoga Asana Championship for the first time is a pivotal moment for this sport. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India’s vision is to promote yoga through sports on a global scale, ensuring it resonates in numerous multi-sport events and has a strong chance of becoming an Olympic sport. We have built a robust competitive ecosystem, and now yoga asana is ready for the global stage. India takes pride in leading this movement, as yoga asana is the gateway to a yogic lifestyle.”
Jaydeep Arya, Secretary General of World Yoga Asana and Yoga Asana India, remarked, “The level of participation and talent observed during the national trials in Sonipat reflects the tremendous growth of yoga asana across India. This championship will provide athletes with an international platform and accelerate the global recognition and development of the sport.”
Recognized and operated globally by World Yoga Asana, this sport combines the discipline of yoga with the spirit of athletic competition. Athletes’ performances are evaluated based on standardized criteria, including accuracy, balance, flexibility, control, stability, and difficulty level. This June, athletes, officials, and federations from around the world will gather in Ahmedabad for this landmark event.
