Ranchi, May 14: The DNA testing process has commenced for the skeletal remains found in connection with the case of a missing woman from the Pindrajora area of Bokaro, following directives from the Jharkhand High Court. During a hearing on Thursday, the central government informed the court that DNA samples from the recovered skeleton and the missing woman’s parents have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Kolkata for analysis.
Due to the complex structure and variations of the bones, the final report is expected to take approximately 15 more days. A bench comprising Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Sanjay Prasad has scheduled the next hearing for June 8, based on the information provided by the central government. Notably, the 18-year-old woman from Bokaro has been missing since July 31, 2025.
Her mother, Rekha Devi, has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Jharkhand High Court seeking her daughter’s whereabouts. During the investigation, police arrested a man named Dinesh Kumar Mahto last month based on technical evidence. The accused allegedly confessed to murdering the woman due to pressure to marry her. Following his directions, the police recovered a skeleton.
However, the family has consistently questioned the police’s claims. Advocates Vincent Rohit Marki and Shantanu Gupta, representing the family, argued in court that the recovered skeleton does not belong to their daughter. They contend that the remains appear to be quite old and were found in a public area, raising doubts about the identification.
To resolve this dispute, DNA testing is being conducted. Previously, during a hearing on April 15, the High Court reprimanded the state government and police administration for the slow pace of the investigation and delays in the DNA testing process. The court directed the DGP, FSL director, Bokaro SP, and the SIT team to appear in person.
