New Delhi, February 25: With clear policy guidelines and strong industry participation, India can establish itself as a leading global center for electric mobility manufacturing and innovation. This statement was made by H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel.

During a press briefing at the ‘FICCI National Conference on Electric Vehicles’, the minister stated, “We will adopt the best methods to encourage the adoption of electric mobility.”

He further emphasized that as India moves towards the vision of ‘Developed India 2047’, electric mobility should remain a focal point of the ‘Make in India’ agenda. This will strengthen domestic manufacturing, promote localization, and position India as a global production hub for electric vehicles, batteries, and critical components.

Over the past decade, India’s automotive component exports have nearly doubled, rising from approximately $8 billion to $16.9 billion.

Kumaraswamy told attendees, “This growth reflects India’s increasing integration into global value chains and its rising reliability as a manufacturing hub.”

Former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant noted that the global electric vehicle market is expected to reach a trillion dollars in the next decade.

He stated at the event, “Supply chains are being restructured, and countries are rethinking localization and strategic dependencies. India must strengthen its position as a reliable manufacturing center for electric vehicles.”

The former G20 Sherpa remarked, “Electric mobility is not only essential for the climate; it also presents significant economic, industrial, technological, and strategic opportunities. The transition to electric vehicles should be considered a central pillar of Developed India 2047.”

Vikram Handa, co-chair of the FICCI Green Mobility Committee, mentioned that “from Green Mobility 1.0 to now 2.0,” India has built a comprehensive value chain.

He added, “This includes processing critical minerals, cell manufacturing, battery pack assembly, and the production of two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, buses, trucks, and even charging infrastructure. This extensive ecosystem reflects the direction of Indian industry and mirrors immense future possibilities.”
