Patna, May 21: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has successfully completed and launched a 170-foot long Bailey bridge at Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur, Bihar. This temporary bridge is expected to restore the movement of light vehicles and essential services soon.
Vikramshila Setu is a crucial 4.88-kilometer bridge over the Ganges River, connecting National Highway-33 and National Highway-31. It is considered a lifeline for Bhagalpur and its surrounding areas. Recently, a 34-meter navigational section of the bridge was damaged, completely disrupting traffic and significantly affecting the movement of people and the supply of essential services.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the Bihar government urgently requested assistance from the Ministry of Defence. Subsequently, the ministry entrusted the responsibility of repairing the bridge and arranging alternatives to the BRO. The BRO worked at a war footing, completing the 170-foot Bailey bridge in a very short time.
The BRO’s ‘Project Swastik’ construction team rapidly accomplished this challenging task. According to officials, in addition to the bridge that has been completed, two more Bailey bridges will soon be installed at the damaged sections of Vikramshila Setu. These bridges will help restore connectivity between North and South Bihar.
On May 20, Jitendra Prasad, the Additional Director General of the BRO (Eastern Region), visited the bridge site. He expressed satisfaction with the rapid pace of construction and assured the state administration that the remaining two bridges would also be completed soon. Before the inspection, he held a meeting with Pankaj Kumar Pal, the Secretary of the Road Construction Department in Patna. Senior officials from the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation and the BRO were also present.
The state administration has expressed gratitude to the BRO for timely assistance and the swift completion of construction work. Officials state that restoring connectivity will significantly reduce the difficulties faced by people and allow the supply of essential services to return to normal. This achievement once again demonstrates the BRO’s capability to work quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
