Bhawanipatna, May 21: In a shocking incident in Berhampur, Odisha, a notorious criminal was injured during a police encounter after a brutal attack on a couple. The police apprehended the suspect, Mukesh Sahu, late Wednesday night. IG of Police, Niti Shekhar, provided details on Thursday.
According to the IG, after arresting Mukesh Sahu, the police team was transporting him to the location of one of his accomplices. During this transfer near Tamana Valley, Sahu snatched a firearm from an assistant sub-inspector and attempted to flee while firing at the police.
In response, the police fired in self-defense, resulting in a gunshot wound to Sahu’s leg. IG Niti Shekhar emphasized that strict action would be taken against anti-social elements involved in criminal activities.
Notably, Berhampur police had arrested two other suspects, Raj Malhotra and Lingraj Samal, also known as Rinku, on Wednesday. Police stated that Raj Malhotra was present at the scene during the attack and assisted the main assailants. Lingraj Samal is accused of conspiring with the other suspects and providing them shelter.
Police sources revealed that Raj Malhotra and Lingraj Samal face multiple charges under various sections of the IPC and the Indian Penal Code at different police stations in Berhampur.
The incident occurred on Monday evening when Umesh Rath was standing with his fiancée near a food stall on Giri Road in Berhampur. A group of assailants attacked him over an old rivalry, brutally beating him. His fiancée was also injured while trying to defend him.
A video of the attack went viral on social media, raising concerns about law and order in the state and prompting scrutiny of the police’s response.
