Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Questions Media Focus on Fuel Prices Amid Central Government Hikes

Bengaluru, May 21: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns on Thursday regarding the media’s focus on state taxation policies amidst rising fuel prices imposed by the central government. He indicated that the state government would not reduce taxes on petrol and diesel.

In response to journalists’ inquiries, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “The central government will increase fuel prices, and should we lower them? Why doesn’t the media question them on this issue? Instead, they keep asking us if we will reduce prices.”

When reporters pointed out that the state government has also increased taxes on fuel, he retorted, “Why are you asking me about this? Shouldn’t you first question those who have raised the prices?”

Siddaramaiah compared current fuel prices to those during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure and after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office. He asked, “What happened to diesel and petrol prices after PM Modi came to power? During Manmohan Singh’s time, diesel was ₹48 per liter and petrol was ₹70 per liter. The price of an LPG cylinder was ₹414. What are the current prices? Who has raised them?”

When asked if the state government would provide relief to those affected by rising fuel prices, he did not respond and left the venue.

Later, on the occasion of Anti-Terrorism Day, CM Siddaramaiah administered an oath at the Vidhana Soudha conference hall. Home Minister G. Parameshwara, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and senior officials participated in the event.

While administering the oath, CM Siddaramaiah stated, “We, the citizens of India, affirm our faith in the great tradition of non-violence and tolerance of our country, and we resolve to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence with determination and strength. We pledge to promote peace, social harmony, and mutual understanding among all sections of society and to fight with all our might against divisive and destructive forces that threaten human values and life.”
