Harvard University Apologizes for Controversial Sanskrit Program Post

Washington, February 28: Harvard University’s South Asian Department has issued an apology for a post that negatively portrayed its Sanskrit program. Several Hindu organizations have condemned the university’s stance.

In a statement, Harvard emphasized its long-standing history of studying and teaching the Sanskrit language and its traditions. The department assured that future social media posts will align with its dignity and reputation.

The university clarified that it has no connection to this controversy and that the post does not involve Lakshmi Mittal or his family. The Mittal Institute has also expressed agreement with Harvard’s statement.

Harvard noted that the ancient language has played a crucial role in the development of languages across South Asia. Due to its significance, it is often referred to as the language of the gods. Sanskrit has been integral to epic texts such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Hindu organizations in North America have also supported the university’s position.

The South Asian Department offers various elementary and advanced courses in Sanskrit. The language holds a vital place in India’s educated and religiously aware society, enriching many South Asian languages. Participants from Sanskrit groups have drawn attention at numerous events across the United States and Canada.
