Sanya, April 27: The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is planning to reschedule the Asian Games to take place one year before the Summer Olympics in 2032. This move aims to better align the continental event with the world’s largest sports showcase.
OCA Vice President Song Luzheng informed Xinhua on Monday that this adjustment is expected to be implemented starting with the Doha Asian Games, which will be shifted from 2030 to 2031. The OCA Executive Board has already approved this proposal, and discussions are ongoing with international sports federations.
Song stated, “This will allow the Asian Games to serve as a qualifying event for the Olympics, providing more elite athletes with valuable competition opportunities and enhancing the overall standard of the Games.” He noted that Olympic qualification is currently managed by international federations, and the OCA is in the final stages of negotiations with some of them regarding the new plan. If approved, this change will start with the Doha 2030 Asian Games, which will be postponed to 2031. This will also affect the Riyadh 2034 Asian Games, which will be moved to 2035.
In contrast, the previously scheduled Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games will remain in their original slot from September 19 to October 4, 2026. Notably, India is keen to host the Asian Games for the first time since 1982. The country has expressed interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games, and this proposal was discussed during the OCA Executive Board meeting in Sanya, China. India previously hosted the inaugural Asian Games in 1951 and last held the event in 1982. This is why India is eager to secure the hosting rights for the 2038 Asian Games.
