West Bengal Governor Dissolves Assembly Amid Political Turmoil

Kolkata, May 7: West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the state assembly on Thursday. This decision came after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign following her party’s electoral defeat.

Governor Ravi also dismissed Banerjee’s cabinet, utilizing powers granted under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution. A letter from Nabanna, Kolkata, confirmed that the assembly dissolution order is effective immediately.

The political landscape in West Bengal has become tense after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) lost the assembly elections, particularly due to Banerjee’s refusal to step down as Chief Minister.

Mamata Banerjee has held power in West Bengal since 2011, serving as Chief Minister three times. In the 2026 assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a significant victory, securing 207 out of 293 seats. In contrast, the TMC managed to win only 80 seats. The BJP surpassed the majority mark of 148 seats, while voting for one seat in Falta will take place on May 21, with results announced on May 24.

Banerjee faced a major setback, losing her traditional seat in Bhawanipur to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes. Despite this, she has refused to concede defeat, alleging widespread electoral fraud that deprived her of the public mandate. Banerjee stated, “We did not lose; we were defeated.”
