Assam Congress Leader Banshree Gogoi Resigns from Party Positions

Guwahati, May 16: Senior Congress leader Banshree Gogoi has resigned from all positions within the Indian National Congress and her primary membership, marking a significant setback for the party in Assam.

In her resignation letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Gogoi stated she is stepping down from all responsibilities with immediate effect. She wrote, “I hereby resign from all positions, responsibilities, and primary membership of the Indian National Congress.”

Gogoi, who previously served as the National Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress, expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the opportunities she received during her tenure. In her letter, she mentioned, “I am thankful for the opportunities and experiences I gained while being associated with the party. I will continue to work for the people of Assam and the nation in my personal capacity.”

She requested the party leadership to accept her resignation and relieve her of all organizational responsibilities as soon as possible. Copies of her resignation letter were also sent to Alka Lamba, President of the All India Mahila Congress, and Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

This resignation comes in the wake of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) impressive victory in the recent assembly elections, where Congress was reduced to just 19 seats, sparking fresh political speculation in Assam.

Recently, former Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah criticized his former party, stating that Congress is now facing the consequences of its actions following its dismal performance in the assembly elections.

Borah, who left Congress to join the BJP before the elections, won a seat in the Bihpuria assembly constituency on a BJP ticket. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for the BJP’s sweeping electoral success, asserting that the public has supported the government’s development agenda. He acknowledged, “I must admit that under Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, Assam has achieved unprecedented political success. The people have once again placed their trust in his leadership.”
