PM Modis Norway Visit: Key Agreements Strengthening India-Norway Relations

Oslo, May 19: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the highest recognition during his visit to Norway. The trip resulted in the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the two nations. A significant outcome of this visit is the establishment of a Green Strategic Partnership between India and Norway.

This partnership aims to enhance collaboration in climate action, green industries, and the circular economy. It will facilitate technical cooperation and climate financing to promote a green transition. Additionally, it connects Norwegian technology with India’s manufacturing capabilities.

Norway has also joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, which aims to foster a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. This initiative will strengthen cooperation on maritime security.

The collaboration extends to the maritime sector, with India participating in Nor-Shipping 2027. This partnership will promote knowledge sharing in shipbuilding, green shipping, and port infrastructure, contributing to the blue economy.

A digital development partnership has been agreed upon, focusing on digital public goods, an open digital ecosystem, and digital public infrastructure. This framework will support India’s Digital India mission and scalable digital transformation initiatives, enhancing India’s Digital Public Infrastructure in collaboration with Norway.

In the health sector, an agreement was reached to advance institutional cooperation through the Joint Working Group (JWG), facilitating knowledge sharing and joint projects between medical and research institutions.

Furthermore, a specialized consultancy agreement was established for tunnel construction, slope stability, and capacity building. This will enhance collaboration on geotechnical projects focused on tunnels and slope stability for roads and highways, creating a framework for project-to-project cooperation, including technical consulting and safety audits.

The technical cooperation agreement between India and Norway will promote joint research in clean energy, climate action, healthcare, and the blue economy. It aims to enhance the exchange of scientists, researchers, and experts.

Through a collaboration agreement between the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in India and SINTEF in Norway, sustainable development projects will be advanced. This will support innovation in bio-based materials, ocean energy, and carbon capture, promoting collaboration on circular economy solutions.

A project-specific implementation agreement will facilitate cooperation in offshore wind and wave energy technology, supporting the development of sustainable ocean energy systems. Joint innovation in deep-water renewable energy solutions will also be encouraged.

The agreement on science, technology, and innovation cooperation for the green shift will enhance mobility for students, researchers, and faculty, strengthening collaboration in science, technology, and sustainability through joint research and academic partnerships.

Lastly, an agreement was reached between the CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad and Emerald Geomodelling AS in Norway. This collaboration will promote scientific expertise for large infrastructure projects, enhancing decision-making through advanced geoscientific solutions.
