Bengaluru, May 18: Chaos erupted during a preparatory meeting at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office in Bengaluru on Monday. Tensions flared as rival factions of Youth Congress workers engaged in heated debates, pushing and shoving, and even physical altercations.
This incident has once again highlighted the internal divisions within the Karnataka Congress ahead of a large protest against alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), scheduled for May 21.
Supporters of Karnataka Youth Congress President H.S. Manjunath Gowda clashed with those backing former Vice President Deepika Reddy. Notably, Gowda is a staunch ally of Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress President D.K. Shivakumar.
The situation spiraled out of control until senior leaders intervened to calm both factions. Reports suggest that the unrest stemmed from the recent decision by the national Youth Congress leadership to remove Deepika Reddy from her vice-presidential position, leading to discontent among her supporters.
This incident has exposed the growing internal rifts within the Karnataka Youth Congress unit, with supporters of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also allegedly involved in the confrontation.
According to party sources, the discontent arose from Reddy’s removal, which intensified dissatisfaction among her followers. As the official preparatory meeting for the May 21 protest commenced, Reddy’s supporters reportedly chanted slogans condemning her ousting.
In response, Gowda’s supporters warned them not to disrupt the meeting. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into physical confrontations between the factions.
