Usha Vance Shares Insights on Life as Second Lady and Supports JD Vances Ambitions

Washington, March 31: Usha Vance recently provided a rare glimpse into her life inside the Vice President’s residence during an interview with NBC News. She discussed family, politics, and her evolving public role.

Usha described her transition from a legal career to public life as “confusing.” She emphasized that her primary role is to support her husband, Vice President JD Vance.

“It was truly bewildering at first because everything changes. My entire day shifted after my husband took office, and I had to distance myself from my professional work,” she explained.

She also noted that this change allowed her to focus on issues she cares about, such as education and family life. “My role here is to help him achieve his goals and support him during this time,” she stated.

At 40, Usha Vance is the first Indian-American Second Lady. She mentioned that her involvement in the Vice President’s work is informal yet consistent. “We keep talking… there’s always communication. When something bothers him, I become more actively involved,” she added.

Usha discussed her political evolution, expressing comfort with her changing ideology over time. “I don’t feel the need to present myself in a contrived way… sometimes my views are quite different and personal,” she said.

Despite public scrutiny, she strives to maintain a normal life. “If I go to the grocery store or library in jeans and a T-shirt, someone might recognize me, but most of the time I can go about my regular activities,” she shared, noting that her family still engages in everyday activities like shopping.

Currently pregnant, Usha spoke candidly about balancing motherhood with public expectations. “I have to be more prepared now. During my last pregnancy, I wore more comfortable clothes,” she remarked.

She highlighted the importance of spending time with her children, calling it a “special opportunity” to be with them more amid her official responsibilities.

In addition to her personal experiences, Usha announced a new initiative focused on early education—a podcast aimed at promoting reading habits among children. “This is a way to encourage reading,” she said, explaining that guest readers will participate to inspire children to pick up books.

The interview revealed her efforts to carve out a distinct identity within the administration, encompassing family priorities, public engagement, and activism on select issues.

On Monday, she launched a new podcast for children and families, aiming to promote reading amid declining literacy rates in the U.S.

Usha explained that the initiative, “Story Time with the Second Lady,” seeks to attract children to books from a young age. “When we read, we grow. We will invite special readers to share fun books, have a little conversation, and then encourage children to pick up books themselves. It’s a kind of promotion for reading,” she said.

She connected this project to broader concerns about education, expressing worry over the ongoing decline in literacy rates. “I have been observing the statistics on declining literacy rates, and it is a long-term trend that is concerning,” she concluded.
