Tamil Nadu Government Orders Release of Water for Irrigation in Kanyakumari

Chennai, May 30: The Tamil Nadu government has issued a significant directive to enhance irrigation systems in Kanyakumari district. Under this order, water will be released from the Pechiparai, Perunchani, Chittar-I, and Chittar-II dams, which are part of the Kodaiyar and Pattankal irrigation systems. This process will commence on June 1, 2026, and continue until February 28, 2027. The government has set this timeline to ensure farmers have adequate water supply throughout the agricultural season.

The order specifies that the water release will be managed based on water availability and irrigation needs. A total of 850 cubic feet per second (cusecs) will be released to ensure sufficient water reaches fields through canals and other irrigation methods. This initiative is particularly crucial for areas where agriculture heavily relies on irrigation, as farmers often face water shortages due to unpredictable rainfall.

This decision is expected to bring relief to several taluks in Kanyakumari district, including Thovalai, Agasteeswaram, Kalkulam, Kiliyur, Thiruvattar, and Vilavancode. Approximately 79,000 acres of agricultural land in these regions will benefit from this water supply, potentially boosting the cultivation of rice, bananas, coconuts, and other major crops, thereby improving local farmers’ incomes.

The order was issued by the Principal Secretary of the Water Resources Department. The government believes that this initiative will not only stabilize current agricultural production but also aid in increasing output in the upcoming agricultural season. It is viewed as a significant step towards better water management in the region.
