Meghalaya Unveils State-of-the-Art Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Hall

New Delhi, May 30: The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, is on a three-day visit to the Northeast. On Saturday, he inaugurated a cutting-edge multi-purpose indoor sports hall in Shillong. The minister also announced plans for a world-class high-altitude training center in Meghalaya, which will be established at a cost of ₹150 crores.

During the event, the minister emphasized that this facility will open new avenues for young athletes and play a crucial role in shaping the future of sports in Meghalaya and the broader Northeast region. It will strengthen the sports ecosystem and nurture the next generation of sporting talent.

While reviewing Meghalaya’s preparations to host the 39th National Games in 2027, Dr. Mandaviya chaired a high-level review meeting. The meeting included Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, State Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Rachna Khadse, IOA President P.T. Usha, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, sports officials from eight northeastern states, and senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

During the meeting, Dr. Mandaviya stated that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, the 39th National Games should serve not only as a major sporting event but also as a platform to showcase Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage, diversity, and unique identity to the nation and the world.

Dr. Mandaviya remarked, “Our message for the 39th National Games in Meghalaya in 2027 is sustainability and diversity.”

Given the increasing participation from various states in hosting sports events, the central minister noted that the focus of the National Games should be on talent identification and scouting. He further added, “The National Games should also be used as an opportunity to raise awareness about doping. Athletes need to be educated about the effects of doping.” Dr. Mandaviya suggested that ‘My India’ volunteers should be involved during the national games in Meghalaya.

Praising Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted the significant progress the state has made in the sports sector over the past eight years under his leadership.

Conrad Sangma stated, “He has made a comprehensive and visionary effort to strengthen the sports ecosystem in Meghalaya. From promoting sports science and modern training methods to establishing robust talent identification and grassroots development programs, the Chief Minister has set an example for other states.”
