
Gandhinagar, May 30: The Fourth National Arm Wrestling and Para Arm Wrestling Championship 2026 was inaugurated on Saturday at the National Defence University, Gandhinagar. The event was presided over by Preeti Jangiani, President of the People’s Arm Wrestling Federation of India (PAFWI). This four-day competition, organized through a collaborative effort by the Arm Wrestling Federation of Gujarat and PAFWI, features over 2,000 athletes from 27 states and union territories across the country, including Gujarat.
During the event, Preeti Jangiani extended her best wishes to all participating athletes from various states and union territories, encouraging them to showcase their skills. She also expressed gratitude to the organizers at the National Defence University for hosting the event so beautifully.
Dr. Bimal N. Patel, Vice Chancellor of the National Defence University, congratulated the athletes via a virtual message. He emphasized that this championship would play a crucial role in strengthening Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of enhancing the cultural legacy of sports and revitalizing the importance of discipline, fitness, and excellence in athletics.
He expressed happiness over India’s growing performance in sports on a global scale, highlighting the significance of sports for national development.
Actor Suniel Shetty, in a video message, inspired youth across the country to engage actively in sports and become part of the national platform.
The previous National Championship held in Thrissur, Kerala, saw participation from 1,700 players across 25 states. In contrast, this fourth edition at the National Defence University features over 2,000 players from 27 states, showcasing the sport’s development.
Notably, the World Police and Fire Games in 2029 will feature eight different sports at the National Defence University in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, with necessary infrastructure already in place. This competition aims to highlight Gujarat’s growing contribution to national and global sports and aligns with the vision of strengthening Ahmedabad’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
Prominent attendees included MLA Dhavalsinh Jhala, Pro-Panja League owner Praveen Dabas, RRU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Kalpesh Bandra, Registrar Dharmesh Prajapati, Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports Yash Sharma, Sports Training Officer Kalpesh Sharma, and representatives from the Arm Wrestling Association of Gujarat.
