Kolkata, May 30: The political landscape has intensified following an attack on TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur. Leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have expressed their outrage over the incident.
During the attack, security personnel acted swiftly to ensure Banerjee’s safety, providing him with a helmet and escorting him to a secure location. In response, the TMC stated that the true face of BJP’s politics has been exposed. The attack on their national general secretary highlights the rapid deterioration of law and order under the current regime. If a sitting MP can be targeted in broad daylight, what hope remains for ordinary citizens? Is this what democracy means for the BJP? Is this the good governance that PM Modi continues to praise? Violence, intimidation, and political thuggery have become hallmarks of BJP rule. Those responsible may currently enjoy political protection, but they cannot evade accountability forever. Bengal is watching. India is watching. The world is watching.
Akhilesh Yadav took to social media, stating that the attack on Abhishek Banerjee by the chaotic BJP government in Bengal proves that the BJP is capable of nothing but hate-filled, violent politics. The lack of police presence in such a sensitive environment points to a larger conspiracy. This is utterly condemnable.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned the shocking attack on Banerjee, who was visiting families affected by post-election violence in the state. Deliberately failing to provide adequate police protection to a prominent opposition leader clearly reveals the BJP’s retaliatory politics and oppressive mindset. Both the West Bengal and central governments must ensure the safety of all opposition leaders and take immediate steps to prevent such attacks. Political differences can never justify any form of violence.
