Chennai, May 30: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a heavy rain forecast for 14 districts in Tamil Nadu, while many areas in the state continue to experience extreme heat.
The meteorological department attributes the changing weather patterns to a cyclonic circulation over the southwest Arabian Sea and adjacent regions. According to the RMC, significant rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next week.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is predicted for the districts of Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Theni. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Karur, Salem, and Erode districts.
The department further indicated that heavy rainfall is likely to persist in the districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Namakkal, and Tirupattur for the next two days. Following this, substantial rainfall may also occur in Tiruppur, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Dharmapuri, Madurai, and Shivaganga.
In Chennai, the forecast predicts overcast skies throughout the day. However, despite the clouds, temperatures are expected to remain high, with maximums reaching around 41 degrees Celsius.
This rain forecast comes at a time when several regions in Tamil Nadu are experiencing heatwave-like conditions. According to data released by the meteorological department, temperatures exceeded 38 degrees Celsius in 13 different locations across the state on Thursday.
Tiruchirappalli recorded the highest maximum temperature at 40 degrees Celsius, while Vellore and Madurai reported 39 degrees Celsius. The Madurai airport, Palayamkottai, and Chennai’s Meenambakkam station recorded temperatures close to 38 degrees Celsius, with Tiruttani reaching 38.3 degrees Celsius.
Reports of high temperatures have also emerged from Erode, Karur Paramathi, Nagapattinam, Parangipettai, Thanjavur, and Chennai’s Nungambakkam area.
S. Balachandran, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, stated that temperatures in the northwestern districts of Tamil Nadu could remain 3 degrees above normal for the next few days. He noted that this year, temperatures in Chennai have been above average, reflecting a trend of rising temperatures across many parts of the state.
The meteorological department has advised the public, especially in districts under heavy rain and heat alerts, to exercise caution and follow official guidance.
