Tokyo, May 30: Thousands of Japanese citizens gathered in front of the National Diet Building on the evening of May 29 to protest against several alarming policy actions of the Sane Takaiichi government.
The rally was themed “Stop the War.” Protesters held banners with slogans such as “Oppose the Export of Destructive Weapons” and “End the Business of War.” They voiced their dissatisfaction with the government’s policies by chanting phrases like “No War,” “Oppose Military Expansion,” and “Protect Peace.”
One protester, Matsuzawa, expressed a strong belief that Japan is rapidly moving towards militarization. He pointed to the Takaiichi government’s attempts to amend Article 9 of the constitution and implement anti-espionage laws as evidence. Matsuzawa remarked, “My child is in elementary school, and I fear that if this continues, I won’t be able to leave a peaceful Japan for my children.”
Notably, the Takaiichi government is simultaneously promoting military expansion domestically while seeking to strengthen security ties with neighboring countries. On May 28, Takaiichi held talks with Philippine President Marcos, who was visiting Japan. Both parties agreed on several deals to enhance the export of defense equipment, including destructive vessels, to the Philippines.
