Kolkata, May 30: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Member of Parliament, encountered significant protests on Saturday in Sonarpur, located in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. He was reportedly visiting to meet a party worker who had allegedly fallen victim to post-election violence.
According to reports, Banerjee left his residence on Kalighat Road in Kolkata for Sonarpur after receiving a notice from the CID for questioning. During his journey, a group of women in the Kamalgazi area displayed black flags in protest against him.
Upon his arrival in Sonarpur, the protests intensified. A large crowd, including many women, began chanting slogans against him, calling him a “thief.” In response, Banerjee exited his vehicle and rode on the motorcycle of a local TMC worker to move forward.
As the crowd surged towards him, some women allegedly pushed him and slapped him. Several protesters threw eggs at him, while others hurled stones, although none struck him. During the chaos, his shirt was torn, and after being hit by eggs, he donned a cricket helmet for protection.
Following the incident, Banerjee accused BJP-backed goons of orchestrating the attack. He stated that he was there to meet his party worker, Sanju Karmakar, who had reportedly been a victim of post-election violence. He also claimed that there was no police presence during the attack.
The TMC MP announced his intention to approach the Calcutta High Court regarding the incident and to inform West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi about the entire occurrence.
It is noteworthy that since the assembly election results were declared, Banerjee had been absent from public events since May 4. Saturday marked his return to public engagements, having previously met another party worker who was a victim of alleged post-election violence in the Belgharia area of North Kolkata.
