New Delhi, June 6: Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal is on a three-day visit to India. During this visit, he met with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The two leaders discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas such as connectivity, energy, and tourism. Khanal is also expected to meet with India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
According to Nepali media outlet ‘The Kathmandu Post’, Minister Khanal stated that the current leadership is free from past political burdens. The new government is ready to end years of political tension with India, aiming to build a relationship based on practical thinking, measurable outcomes, and mutual development.
Khanal arrived in New Delhi on Friday at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, Dr. S. Jaishankar, marking his first official foreign visit. In an interview with the media, he emphasized that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government is committed to mending ties with India and promoting a partnership focused on practical cooperation and shared prosperity.
‘The Himalayan Times’ reported that Khanal will engage in formal discussions with Dr. Jaishankar, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, and people-to-people relations. This visit is part of regular high-level dialogues between the two neighbors and is expected to deepen Nepal-India relations.
The visit comes amid increasing diplomatic engagement between the two countries. Earlier this week, Rabi Lamichhane, the leader of Nepal’s National Independent Party (RSP), held separate meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar.
These meetings addressed Nepal-India relations and areas of mutual cooperation. Khanal was initially scheduled to visit India last month for an International Tiger Conservation Conference, but the event was postponed.
