Udaipur, June 6, 2026 (Daily Kiran): Hindustan Zinc Limited, one of the world’s largest integrated zinc producers and among the top 10 silver producers globally, has signed an MoU with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to develop a 250-hectare ecological restoration project in Rajasthan. The initiative is expected to create the world’s largest green cover area within an industrial complex.

The project will be developed at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex and marks a significant step in the company’s efforts to transform industrial land into a natural ecosystem.
The collaboration is aimed at advancing Hindustan Zinc’s Sustainability Goals 2030. The project seeks to address biodiversity loss through measurable improvements while supporting long-term net positive impact and nature-positive outcomes.
The restoration project will adopt a scientific, multi-layered ecological approach involving native trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses suited to local conditions. It will also include management of invasive species, support for water bodies and aquatic ecosystems, and the development of long-term maintenance and protection protocols. TERI will assist in identifying suitable native and adaptive plant species and engage subject experts during the planning, design and implementation phases.
The partnership builds on the long-standing collaboration between Hindustan Zinc and TERI at the Chanderiya Smelting Complex. Restoration work across 22.25 hectares of land at the Jarofix Yard has already been completed in two phases, converting industrial land into an ecologically functional and biodiversity-rich green cover. In addition, a six-hectare biodiversity park is being developed over a secured landfill site within the complex.
Using TERI’s mycorrhiza technology, approximately 56,400 native trees have been planted under the initiative, resulting in dense greenery across the industrial area.
Commenting on the development, Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said sustainability remains central to the company’s operations. He said the partnership with TERI reflects the company’s commitment to transforming industrial land into resilient green ecosystems that support biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration. He added that as the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals, Hindustan Zinc remains aligned with global benchmarks in sustainable mining and is committed to creating long-term value for the environment, communities and the nation.
The initiative aligns with the company’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance roadmap, which focuses on land restoration, biodiversity conservation, water stewardship, decarbonisation and responsible management of natural resources.
Hindustan Zinc is also strengthening its sustainability performance through a 530 MW round-the-clock renewable energy agreement, which is expected to meet more than 70 percent of its power requirements. Initial power supply under the agreement has already commenced. The company has improved its water recycling rate to 49 percent and expanded its green mobility fleet to 232 vehicles, including electric and LNG-powered vehicles.
A Vedanta Group company, Hindustan Zinc was recently ranked the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025. Through the proposed 250-hectare ecological restoration project, the company aims to contribute towards regenerative landscapes, climate resilience and long-term value creation for communities, biodiversity and the environment.
