Mumbai, February 22: The name Madhubala evokes nostalgia in many hearts. Born on February 14, 1933, in Delhi, her real name was Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi. From a young age, her unique charm captivated both filmmakers and audiences alike.

Her journey began at the age of nine with the film ‘Basant,’ where she debuted as a child artist, eventually rising to become a star in Bollywood. Her fame extended beyond India, garnering attention internationally.

During her era, it was rare for Indian actresses to receive offers from abroad. However, Oscar-winning director Frank Capra extended a lucrative offer for big-budget films in America. This opportunity could have elevated her status in Hollywood, but Madhubala chose to decline it.

She always prioritized her family and country. In an interview, she revealed that this decision was not easy for her career. True success, she believed, lies not just in glamour or wealth but in upholding one’s values and choices.

Throughout her 22-year career, Madhubala acted in nearly 70 films. Iconic movies like ‘Mahal,’ ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ and ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ earned her the title of the ‘Beauty Goddess’ of cinema. Her life was not without challenges; she faced financial hardships in her childhood, and later, a heart condition added to her struggles.

Madhubala’s most significant recognition came from the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam,’ regarded as a classic in Hindi cinema. Despite battling a serious heart ailment during the film’s production, she completed her scenes. There were moments when her health deteriorated on set, but she never allowed her work to suffer.

Though her illness gradually limited her career, she never let her weaknesses define her. Tragically, she passed away at the young age of 36 on February 23, 1969.
