India and Norway Sign Five Major Strategic Agreements in Green Technology

New Delhi, May 19: During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Norway, India and Norway signed five significant agreements aimed at strengthening their partnership in science and technology. These agreements focus on areas such as green energy, sustainable development, marine technology, innovation, and geoscience collaboration.

The primary goal of these agreements is to enhance institutional cooperation between the two countries, boost industry and startup partnerships, promote academic collaboration, and accelerate sustainable development projects.

One of the most crucial agreements was made between the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and the Research Council of Norway (RCN). This collaboration will enhance cooperation in research, technology development, innovation, and capacity building.

The agreement includes provisions for joint workshops, research and development projects, scientist exchange programs, and collaboration on global issues such as climate change, clean energy, marine research, and healthcare services.

Additionally, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has entered into a new collaboration agreement with Norway’s leading independent research institution, SINTEF, for the period of 2026-2029.

This partnership will focus on the circular economy and sustainability transition, conducting joint research and innovation programs in areas such as bio-based materials, ocean energy, offshore wind, carbon capture, storage, and waste management.

Another significant agreement involves several CSIR institutions collaborating with SINTEF entities on project-based cooperation in marine energy and offshore wind energy technologies.

The CSIR Structural Engineering Research Center, CSIR National Aerospace Laboratories, CSIR National Institute of Oceanography, and CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute will be involved in this collaboration. From Norway, SINTEF Ocean, SINTEF Digital, FME Northwind, and SINTEF Community will participate in this partnership. The joint program aims to strengthen India’s offshore renewable energy capacity and support the country’s renewable energy and carbon neutrality goals.

Under this project, efforts will be made on floating offshore wind technology, reducing energy costs, establishing sustainability standards, developing an ESG framework, conducting pilot projects, skill development, and industrial growth.

For this initiative, CSIR will provide funding support of approximately ₹3.41 crore.

Moreover, a joint declaration titled “Cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation for Green Shift” was also signed. This agreement involves CSIR, the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (ACSIR), and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The declaration emphasizes enhancing collaboration in areas such as sustainability, circular economy, ocean science and technology, healthcare, and civil infrastructure engineering. It will also facilitate student and faculty exchanges, joint research activities, academic seminars, and shared educational programs.
