Tehran, May 19: A report was presented to Iran’s National Security Committee amid news of a temporary halt to a second US attack. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi detailed ongoing negotiations regarding a ceasefire with the United States, including terms and Iran’s demands.
According to the official IRNA agency, the report emphasized the “right to peaceful nuclear energy and uranium enrichment.” It reiterated the demand for the lifting of US sanctions and blockades.
The report also highlighted Iran’s requests during discussions, which included ending conflicts on various fronts, ceasing regional wars including those in Lebanon, lifting the US-imposed maritime blockade, returning Iranian assets and funds, compensating for war damages, and removing all unilateral and UN Security Council sanctions. Additionally, it called for the withdrawal of US military forces from around Iran.
This report comes at a time when tensions and diplomatic talks between Iran and the US are ongoing. Meanwhile, the UN has stressed the need for clarity regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the UN, “There should be no restrictions on movement in Hormuz.” UN spokesperson Farhan Haq stated, “We do not want any entity to limit the freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining navigational freedom in the sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
On Monday, Iran announced the establishment of a new authority to control maritime routes, stating that vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz will now require its permission.
