Senior Congress Leader Criticizes Demolition of Poor Nagar Settlement in Bandra

Mumbai, May 19: Senior Congress leader Hussain Dalwai has condemned the decision to demolish the Poor Nagar settlement in Bandra, Maharashtra. He expressed disappointment over the demolition, highlighting that the settlement’s name reflects its residents’ economic status. “It is unfortunate that a decision has been made to demolish Poor Nagar,” he stated.

In an interview with a news agency on Tuesday, Dalwai raised critical questions regarding the demolition process. “Has a survey been conducted? Has any court order been issued regarding this matter?” he asked. He emphasized that without a thorough survey or judicial directive, the decision to demolish the settlement is unjustifiable. He noted that the case is currently under judicial review, making any demolition premature.

Dalwai further accused the government of targeting poor Muslims, asserting that it often distracts from pressing issues by fostering Hindu-Muslim tensions. He pointed out that rising fuel prices have exacerbated inflation, causing significant hardship for the populace. “It is regrettable that the government is ignoring these issues and instead attempting to divert attention by creating communal divisions,” he remarked.

He criticized the government for failing to take action against the wealthy, citing instances of affluent individuals in Worli who have flouted regulations. “I urge Kirit Somaiya to reflect on the wrongdoings he is perpetuating. Inflicting suffering on the poor is a grave sin, and demolishing homes is an even greater transgression,” he added. Most residents of the settlement are laborers earning around 500 rupees a day.

Regarding Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s comments on public prayers, Dalwai stated, “I do not favor praying on the streets; prayers should be held in mosques.” However, he noted that many festivals, including Ganesh Chaturthi, are celebrated publicly. “We should not view these matters through a communal lens,” he urged.

Dalwai also discussed the importance of education and healthcare in controlling population growth. He suggested that the rising population in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is linked to a lack of education rather than religious factors. “If we emphasize education, people will become more aware, and population growth will stabilize,” he asserted, contrasting it with the more educated and aware populace in South India.

He concluded by addressing the rising incidents of encounters, stating that they indicate a breakdown in law and order.
