New Delhi, May 19: Anjum Chopra’s contributions to Indian women’s cricket are monumental. She not only led the team to memorable victories but also secured India’s first win on foreign soil as captain. Under her leadership, the Indian women’s cricket team learned the art of fighting for victory.
Born on May 20, 1977, in New Delhi, Anjum came from a sports-oriented family, making her journey to cricket smoother. Her father was a golf player, while her mother had won accolades in car rallying. Additionally, her brothers played cricket for Delhi at the under-17 and under-19 levels. Initially, Anjum was more interested in basketball, but once she connected with cricket, she became deeply engrossed in the sport.
Anjum made her international debut for India in 1995 against New Zealand. In the 50-over format, she consistently made her mark and, just nine months later, had the opportunity to shine in a white jersey. She seized the moment and became the first woman cricketer to score a century in ODI cricket for India, achieving this feat against England in 1999.
Throughout her career, Anjum played 127 ODIs, accumulating 2,856 runs. She was also the first female cricketer from India to surpass the 1,000-run mark in this format, with one century and 18 half-centuries to her name. In 12 Test matches, she scored 548 runs at an average of 30.00. Additionally, she participated in 18 T20 internationals, amassing 241 runs. Anjum played in six World Cups and played a crucial role in leading the team to the ODI World Cup finals in 2005.
Beyond her batting prowess, Anjum made a name for herself as a captain. In her first series as captain, she guided the Indian team to a remarkable victory against England. Under her leadership, the team also achieved its first away win in South Africa, winning a Test match by 10 wickets. Anjum announced her retirement from international cricket in 2012. For her contributions to Indian women’s cricket, she was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2007 and the Padma Shri in 2014.
