Allegations of Land Sale Near Mahakal Temple Spark Controversy in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, May 19: In a significant political controversy, Umang Singhar, the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, has raised serious allegations regarding a land deal near the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. Singhar claims that government land, currently used for parking, has been sold to a company linked to a BJP legislator.

He alleges that the land, originally designated as government property, was privatized before being sold to Utopia Hotel and Resort Private Limited. Among the directors of this company is Chintamani Malviya, a BJP legislator from Alot.

Singhar questions whether the Mahakal Lok project, presented as a religious and cultural development initiative, has merely become a means to facilitate real estate deals benefiting BJP leaders and affiliates of the ruling BJP government in Madhya Pradesh.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Singhar asked, “Has ‘Mahakal Lok’ now become just a tool for property deals linked to BJP leaders under your government’s supervision?”

This issue pertains to a parcel of land measuring approximately 45,000 square feet. According to Singhar, Utopia Hotel and Resort Private Limited purchased this land for ₹3.82 crore on March 2, 2026.

The Congress party claims that the company’s directors include legislator Chintamani Malviya and his business partner Iqbal Singh.

Rajendra Kuwal, a local resident of Ujjain, has filed formal complaints with the Chief Secretary, Lokayukta, and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has also been filed in the Indore bench of the High Court.

The complaint alleges that revenue records from 1950 and 1967-68 indicate that portions of the acquired land were officially recorded as government property. It is claimed that land worth crores was incorrectly registered as agricultural land, resulting in the evasion of approximately ₹3.40 crore in stamp duty and registration fees.

Singhar stated, “Previously, there were allegations of corruption in the Mahakal Lok project. Now, there are accusations regarding the encroachment of Mahakal’s land and its commercial dealings. The BJP government has turned faith into merely a business opportunity.”

However, legislator Malviya dismissed the opposition’s allegations, calling them “false and malicious.”
