Washington, April 24: Dattatreya Hosabale, the General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated that India’s civilizational thinking can guide the world towards unity. He emphasized that India stands at a pivotal moment where it can play a significant role in creating a more peaceful and balanced global order.
During a special dinner event in the Washington area focused on “India’s Global Vision and Its Role in an Emerging World,” Hosabale elaborated on India’s perspectives. He remarked that India’s traditions are not merely relics of the past but can also provide solutions to contemporary global issues, such as social fragmentation and environmental crises.
In his address, Hosabale noted, “India’s philosophy believes in a singular unity that exists throughout existence. This unity is present in every living and non-living thing.” He explained that this concept forms the foundation of India’s worldview.
Expressing concern about the current global situation, he pointed out that while humanity has made significant material progress, it has lagged in terms of values. “We have increased our possessions, but not our values. We have more knowledge, yet less wisdom in decision-making. While the number of experts has grown, so have the problems,” he stated.
Highlighting India’s unique perspective, he mentioned that the country values spiritual understanding alongside physical development. “In India, nature is regarded as a mother. It is sufficient for our needs but not for greed,” he added.
Discussing diversity, Hosabale argued that it should be viewed not as a source of conflict but as a celebration. Diversity is the beauty of human society, and different cultures should coexist while maintaining their identities.
He explained that human society has always sought to understand relationships at various levels—between humans, between humans and nature, and between humans and the creator. Ultimately, all paths lead to the same truth. “The truth is one, but there are many ways to reach it,” he said.
Regarding India’s global role, Hosabale emphasized that the idea of “the world is one family” (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam) is not just a saying but a principle that India lives by. He cited historical examples of different religions coexisting peacefully in India for centuries.
He also stressed that for India to fulfill this role, it must strengthen itself from within. India needs to become a confident and prosperous society while embracing cultural values alongside modernity.
Hosabale asserted that India has never adopted an expansionist policy. “India has never attacked anyone or enslaved others. Indians living in various countries contribute to their development and maintain social harmony,” he stated.
Walter Russell Mead, a foreign policy expert present at the event, agreed with Hosabale’s views on India’s role. He noted that a “strong, confident, and open India” could reshape global politics and reduce conflicts, particularly in Asia. The world needs a robust and balanced India.
Meanwhile, Walter Anderson, an academic who has studied the RSS for a long time, described the organization as a “stabilizing force” in India. He highlighted that the RSS emphasizes patriotism and has the capacity to adapt over time.
Hosabale also mentioned that India can guide the world not only in politics but also in health and lifestyle. “Today, the entire world looks to India for yoga and balanced living,” he stated.
