Gandhinagar, 22 December: Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that good governance aims to deliver farmer-centric schemes transparently and effectively to the farmers. Farmers are the backbone of India, and the country’s development is possible only when farmers are prosperous, secure, and self-reliant. Under the strong governance of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government is successfully reaching farmer-oriented schemes to all farmers. A prime example is the Kisan Suryoday Yojana (KSY), which currently provides daytime electricity to 17,018 villages, or 98.66 percent of the state’s villages. Under this scheme, 19.69 lakh farmers in Gujarat are receiving power during the day.
Regarding Gujarat’s success in supplying electricity to farmers during daytime, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said, “Due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s farmer-friendly policies and concern for farmers, almost 98 percent of farmers in the state now receive daytime electricity. The remaining farmers will also get daytime power by March 2026, fulfilling this mission. This was a significant decision by the Prime Minister, which we have been able to accomplish. It is a matter of joy for all of us. With sufficient water and electricity supply, the entire agricultural landscape of the state has transformed, making farmers prosperous.”
The Kisan Suryoday Yojana was implemented in 2020 with the objective of supplying power in two slots from 5 am to 9 pm (5 am to 1 pm and 1 pm to 9 pm). However, after implementation, it became necessary to optimize the power supply schedule according to daylight hours, leading to the introduction of a single-shift concept. Under this, farmers receive electricity during sunlight hours, especially from 7 am to 5 pm. Integrating solar power in this manner reduces grid load during peak demand, ensuring reliable and sustainable electricity for agriculture.
Currently, 17,018 villages (98.66 percent) are receiving daytime electricity, and 98 percent of substations in the state have been shifted to daytime operations. Work is underway to shift the remaining 45 rotational substations to cover the remaining 231 villages. The state government has invested Rs 5,353.62 crore for this scheme, including setting up 40 new substations, laying 4,640.73 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, and strengthening the distribution network with 3,927.72 circuit kilometres of MVCC work.
For the financial year 2026-27, Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) plans to strengthen about five substations and 1,100 circuit kilometres of transmission network at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore. Additionally, Rs 375 crore is estimated for laying AB cable/MVCC for DISCOMs in the same year.
Jayesh Patel, a farmer from Kankrol village in Himmatnagar tehsil and president of Himmatnagar mandi, said, “Earlier, farmers had to rely on night-time electricity, which caused difficulties in watering fields at night and resulted in wastage of water and fear of animals. For the last two years under the Kisan Suryoday Yojana, we are receiving electricity during the day, which has resolved all these problems. Farmers now get water in the fields at the right time and in the right quantity, saving time as well. On behalf of all farmers of Himmatnagar tehsil, I thank respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for this.”
The implementation of the Kisan Suryoday Yojana has enabled farmers to irrigate their fields properly during the day, resulting in higher crop yields and economic prosperity. With continuous strengthening of transmission infrastructure, the state government will continue phased implementation of the scheme to ensure reliable and sustainable daytime electricity supply for agriculture.
