
Bengaluru, May 24: A tragic incident occurred in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Sunday, where at least eight members of a single family, including seven women, drowned in the Thatte Hakkalu River.
The family is in shock, and the local community, along with state authorities, is mourning this devastating loss.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families affected. She also wished for the swift recovery of those injured in the tragedy.
In a statement on her social media, President Murmu described the news of the loss of life and property in this unfortunate accident as deeply saddening. She conveyed her heartfelt sympathies to those who have lost loved ones and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.
The heartbreaking event unfolded when nearly a dozen individuals ventured into the river to collect shells.
Initial reports indicate that at least eight people drowned, while three others were swept away by the strong current and lost their balance.
Following the incident, local authorities launched a large-scale search and rescue operation, with residents and emergency teams assisting in the effort to locate the missing individuals.
Some individuals were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the search for the missing continues. The death toll is expected to rise.
Police reported that the deceased were residents of the Shirali area.
Karnataka’s Chief Minister announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh per family for the victims.
Expressing his grief, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that he was deeply saddened to hear about the drowning of eight family members who had gone to collect shells near the river in Bhatkal, Uttara Kannada district. He prayed for eternal peace for the departed souls.
He further emphasized that this is an extremely tragic and painful incident. On humanitarian grounds, the state government will provide ₹5 lakh compensation to each family affected by this disaster.
