Chandigarh, May 24: Sunil Jakhar, the Punjab BJP president, issued a stern warning to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Sunday. He urged them not to resort to any illegal methods to secure victories in the upcoming local body elections. Jakhar emphasized that Punjab will no longer yield to AAP’s tactics of fear and pressure.
He pointed out that statements made by AAP legislators regarding closing polling station doors and seizing booths reflect the party’s desperation. According to Jakhar, such remarks indicate that AAP is already conceding defeat. He believes these statements reveal that after four and a half years of misgovernance, voters are no longer willing to support AAP candidates, prompting them to consider undemocratic means to “steal” the elections.
In a media briefing, Jakhar criticized the AAP government for burdening Punjab with over ₹2.25 lakh crore in debt and squandering state revenue over the past four and a half years. He argued that this money should have been invested in the state’s development. Jakhar accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration of allowing corruption, lawlessness, and drug abuse to reach alarming levels, leaving citizens feeling unsafe.
He asserted that the public has firmly decided that the next government in Punjab will be led by the BJP. In this context, he appealed to voters to reject parties that undermine the electoral process and unite with the BJP for a better future for Punjab.
Jakhar also cautioned AAP leaders who are discussing closing polling station doors, stating that the people of Punjab will instead close their own doors to such tactics. He claimed that given the upcoming census, assembly elections might occur sooner than expected, leaving the Mann government with only a few months to act.
