
Coimbatore, May 24: Youth organizations in Tamil Nadu‘s Madurai and Coimbatore staged protests on Sunday under the banner of ‘Cockroach’. These demonstrations aimed to draw attention to pressing issues such as unemployment, alleged irregularities in competitive exams, rising fuel prices, and corruption.
Organized by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students Federation of India (SFI), the protests saw a significant turnout of students and young people demanding equal access to job opportunities and education.
In Madurai, protesters gathered near the Gandhi Memorial Museum before marching towards the Tamukkam ground. They carried posters featuring cockroach symbols and chanted slogans highlighting issues like unemployment and corruption.
The organizers stated that the campaign aims to shed light on the challenges faced by youth struggling for employment opportunities and access to education.
A similar protest was held in Coimbatore by the local unit of DYFI. Young participants donned cockroach masks and marched from the Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School in Siddhapudur to the Gandhi Puram bus stand.
Police were deployed along the route to maintain security and manage traffic.
The organizers emphasized that the protests aimed to draw the central government’s attention to critical issues affecting youth across the country.
Demands raised during the rallies included measures to tackle unemployment, action against alleged irregularities in the NEET exam process, steps to control rising petrol and diesel prices, and robust protections for educational rights.
The unique symbols used in the campaign garnered significant public attention, making the ‘cockroach’ emblem a prominent identity for the protests.
