Gas Explosion in Chinas Coal Mine Claims 82 Lives

Beijing, May 24: A gas explosion at the Liyushan Coal Mine, operated by the Shanxi Tongchao Group, resulted in the tragic deaths of 82 individuals, with two more reported missing and 128 injured. The incident occurred on May 22 at approximately 10:30 PM, while 247 workers were underground at the time.

Mayor Chen Xiangyang of Changzhi city stated that local authorities promptly activated an emergency response plan for coal mine safety incidents. This included the deployment of 335 professional rescuers and 420 medical personnel. Mobile hyperbaric oxygen chambers and 86 ambulances were dispatched from nearby areas to maximize rescue efforts and expedite the search for trapped individuals.

Additionally, local officials are closely monitoring underground gas and carbon monoxide concentrations to prevent secondary accidents. They have ordered all four coal mines under the Shanxi Tongchao Group to halt production for safety improvements. Initial assessments indicate serious violations of relevant laws by the mining company, prompting local authorities to implement control measures against the company’s actual controllers, responsible individuals, and other related personnel.
