New Delhi, May 24: Balbir Singh is celebrated as one of the greatest players in Indian hockey history. He was a prominent figure during what is known as the golden era of Indian hockey. Singh played a pivotal role in leading the Indian hockey team to gold medals in three consecutive Olympics.
Born on October 10, 1924, in Haripur, Punjab, he is also known as Balbir Singh Senior. He began playing hockey at the age of five, initially starting as a goalkeeper before moving to the backline. His breakthrough came when he was given the opportunity to play as a striker, which propelled him onto the national stage.
Singh led Punjab to national hockey medals in 1946 and 1947, ending a 14-year wait for the title. His outstanding performance earned him a spot on the national team.
Regarded as one of the finest center-forwards in Indian hockey, Balbir Singh made extraordinary contributions to the Indian team’s gold medal victories at the 1948 London Olympics, the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He scored 8 goals in London and 9 in Helsinki, including 2 goals in the final match against the Netherlands, where he helped secure a 6-1 victory. His five goals in the Helsinki final remain the record for the most goals scored by a player in an Olympic men’s hockey final. He also achieved a hat-trick against Great Britain in the semifinals. In 1956, he played through an injury to help India defeat Pakistan and win gold. He was also part of the Indian team that won a silver medal at the 1958 Asian Games.
Balbir Singh retired from hockey in 1960 but remained involved with the sport as a coach, manager, and selector. His life inspired the film “Gold,” featuring Akshay Kumar. In 1957, he was honored with the Padma Shri award. Balbir Singh passed away on May 25, 2020.
