
Karwar, May 24: The death toll from a tragic incident in Karnataka’s Karwar district has risen to 10. Family members drowned while collecting shells in the river on Sunday.
Local residents managed to rescue three individuals, while search efforts continue for another missing family member. The identities of two other victims have yet to be confirmed.
Expressing his condolences, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for each victim’s family. He stated, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate incident in Bhatkal, where family members went to collect shells and drowned. I pray for the peace of the departed souls.”
He described the event as extremely unfortunate and tragic, emphasizing that the state government will provide ₹5 lakh to each family affected by this tragedy.
Furthermore, he noted that reports indicate some individuals are still missing, and a thorough search operation is underway. “Let us all pray that the missing person returns safely to their loved ones,” he added.
Among the deceased, eight individuals have been identified as Lakshmi Madev Naik (38), Lakshmi Shivaram Naik (39), Malati Jattappa Naik (38), Mastamma Manjunath Naik (43), Lakshmi Naik, Lakshmi Annapappa Naik (44), Jyoti Naik, and Umesh Manjunath Naik.
All victims belonged to the same family and were residents of Sharadahol in Padushirali village near Shirali in Bhatkal taluk.
This tragic event occurred near Bhatkal in Karwar district. According to officials, a group of 14 individuals had entered the river to collect shells when several of them became trapped in deep water.
