Alexander Zverev Advances to Second Round of French Open After Defeating Benjamin Bonzi

Paris, May 24: Alexander Zverev has secured his spot in the second round of the French Open. On Sunday, Zverev defeated French player Benjamin Bonzi with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on the clay courts of Paris. The match lasted 2 hours and 8 minutes.

Zverev controlled the game from the baseline throughout the match, applying pressure on Bonzi with his powerful serve and consistent groundstrokes, easily advancing to the next round of Roland Garros.

The 29-year-old has a history of success on the clay courts in Paris. In his last five tournaments, he reached the finals in 2024, three semifinals, and one quarterfinal. Since 2017, Zverev has never lost before the fourth round at this event.

This clay-court season, Zverev has shown similar consistency, reaching the finals in Madrid and the semifinals in Monte Carlo and Munich. He also made it to the semifinals in hard-court ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.

In his first head-to-head encounter against Bonzi, Zverev faced no difficulties. The French player had previously won a set against Jannik Sinner in Madrid but was unable to overcome the second-seeded player.

According to Infosys Stats, the two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion faced only two break points during the match and converted five out of ten opportunities.

Zverev’s next match will be against Czech player Tomáš Macháč, who defeated Jiji Burgs 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Ranked third in the PIF ATP rankings, Zverev previously defeated Macháč at the Paris Olympics two years ago.

In other early matches on the first day of the main draw, 21st seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina made a comeback after losing the first two sets to defeat Damir Džumhur 6-7(3), 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Spanish player will now face Argentina’s Thiago Agustín Tirante.

13th seed Karen Khachanov recorded a convincing victory against French wildcard Arthur Gea with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-0. He will next compete against Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti.
