BJPs Krishnendu Paul Triumphs in Patharkandi Assembly Election

Guwahati, May 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in the Patharkandi assembly constituency of Assam. The party fielded Krishnendu Paul, who faced off against Congress candidate Kartik Sen Sinha. In a closely contested election, the people of Patharkandi chose to support the BJP candidate.

Krishnendu Paul won by a significant margin, defeating Kartik Sinha by 46,764 votes. Paul secured 98,101 votes, while Sinha garnered 51,337 votes.

Voting in the Patharkandi assembly seat took place on April 9, with a remarkable turnout. Voter participation reached 84.85%, with a total of 178,484 registered voters, including 90,395 men and 88,085 women.

This election saw nine candidates vying for the seat. Besides Krishnendu Paul from the BJP and Kartik Sen Sinha from Congress, other contenders included Bijit Sinha from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), Saynul Haq from the Aam Aadmi Party, and Biju Paul from the All India Forward Bloc, along with four independent candidates.

In the previous assembly elections of 2021, the BJP also claimed victory in this constituency, with Krishnendu Paul defeating Congress’s Sachin Sahu by 4,467 votes.

Krishnendu Paul serves as Assam’s Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, a role he assumed following the BJP’s formation of government in Assam in 2021. He holds a bachelor’s degree and is a businessman by profession. According to his election affidavit, Paul has a total asset worth 10.2 crores and has declared no pending criminal cases against him.

Patharkandi is a general (unreserved) semi-urban assembly constituency and is one of six segments of the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat.

Previously, in 2016, the BJP won the Patharkandi assembly seat, taking it from the AIUDF. Krishnendu Paul defeated AIUDF candidate Debendu Kumar Sinha by a margin of 9,268 votes.

Historically, Congress was the dominant political force in the region for decades. However, in recent years, the BJP has significantly strengthened its position. Established in 1951, Patharkandi has participated in all 15 assembly elections held in the state. Both Congress and the BJP have won five times each, while independent candidates have secured victories four times, and the CPI has won once.
