London, May 15: Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s prospects have brightened following the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, who vacated his seat. This resignation paves the way for a by-election in Simons’ constituency, allowing Burnham to contest.
According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, Burnham is viewed as a potential challenger to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer within the Labour Party.
In his resignation announcement shared on social media, Simons expressed that the government has failed to implement necessary changes for his constituency. He decided to make room for a leader who possesses the radical thinking, energy, and courage needed to tackle current challenges.
Burnham later confirmed on social media that he would seek permission from the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to stand in the Makerfield by-election.
Having served as an MP for 16 years in the House of Commons, Burnham has been the Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017. His previous attempt to return to Westminster was blocked by the NEC earlier this year.
British media suggest that Burnham has garnered enough support within the Labour Party to challenge Starmer’s leadership. However, becoming an MP is a prerequisite for eligibility to run for party leadership.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on Starmer to resign following the Labour Party’s poor performance in last week’s local elections. Reports indicate that over 90 Labour MPs have urged the Prime Minister to step down, while several cabinet ministers have shown solidarity with him.
Additionally, British Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned on Thursday afternoon, stating that he no longer has confidence in Starmer’s leadership and cannot remain in government with honor and principles.
Streeting also hinted that Starmer would not lead the Labour Party in the next general election, urging open discussions about leadership within the party. In response, Starmer expressed his disappointment over Streeting’s resignation and called on the party to unite for the nation and fulfill its promises.
Earlier, on Wednesday, Starmer warned that a leadership challenge against him would plunge the Labour Party into “chaos.” However, speculation about his replacement has intensified following the disappointing results in the local elections.
