Srinagar, May 15: The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has approved a solid waste management project worth ₹361 crore in the Achhan area of Srinagar district.
An official statement revealed that the Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of an integrated solid waste management project with a capacity of 800 tonnes per day (TPD) in Achhan, Srinagar. The estimated cost for this project is ₹361 crore.
This decision was made during the sixth Cabinet meeting, aiming to enhance the scientific waste management infrastructure in Srinagar. The project will ensure environmentally responsible disposal and processing of urban solid waste.
The proposed integrated solid waste management project aims to improve Srinagar’s waste processing capacity through modern and efficient systems for collection, segregation, treatment, and disposal of solid waste.
It is expected that this project will significantly enhance sanitation standards, reduce environmental pollution, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
Establishing this facility in Achhan is also anticipated to support long-term urban planning and sustainability efforts, addressing the growing waste management needs amid rapid urban expansion and population growth.
In another significant decision, the Cabinet approved the upgrading of the Hazratbal Sub-District Hospital by relaxing restrictions related to the buffer zone under the Srinagar Master Plan–2035.
This decision aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve patient care delivery. The project had been stalled for several years due to restrictions imposed by buffer zone provisions, causing considerable inconvenience to the public.
With the approval received on Thursday, Hazratbal Hospital is expected to provide better infrastructure and advanced medical facilities, including blood bank services, operation theaters, and specialized treatment options for various illnesses.
