Keralas New Government Formation Accelerates as VD Satheesan Meets Governor

Thiruvananthapuram, May 14: The process of forming a new government in Kerala has gained momentum. VD Satheesan, the designated Chief Minister, formally claimed to form the government during a meeting with Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Thursday.

Following his unanimous selection as the leader by the Congress Legislative Party and the support from UDF allies, Satheesan met the Governor at the Lok Bhavan, presenting letters of support from the Congress-led coalition. This coalition achieved a remarkable victory in the assembly elections, securing 102 out of 140 seats.

Subsequently, the Governor invited Satheesan to form the next government, effectively removing the last constitutional hurdle ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Monday.

Efforts are now underway to ensure that the complete cabinet, consisting of 21 members including the Chief Minister, takes their oaths simultaneously on Monday.

Sources indicate that Congress leadership is working to finalize the entire cabinet list before the weekend, aiming for a smooth and decisive power transfer.

The assembly session is expected to be convened on May 21, when all newly elected legislators will also take their oaths.

The political atmosphere around the Lok Bhavan in Kerala stands in stark contrast to the tense events faced by Arlekar just days earlier as the acting Governor of Tamil Nadu. During that time, uncertainty over seat numbers led to multiple consultations before Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay could finally secure the necessary legislative support to form the government. However, with the Congress high command finalizing Satheesan’s name, any suspense in Kerala has nearly dissipated.

Earlier in the day, during a Congress Legislative Party meeting, KPCC President Sunny Joseph formally proposed Satheesan’s name, which was supported by Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan. Senior Congress leaders, including Mukul Wasnik and Deepa Dasmunshi, addressed the assembly, praising the collective leadership of Satheesan, KC Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala for securing victory for the UDF.

After several days of political uncertainty and constitutional complexities in Chennai, the transfer of power in Kerala now appears to be smooth and straightforward.
