Guwahati, May 15: Assam police have conducted a significant anti-narcotics operation, seizing drugs worth approximately ₹21.36 crore and arresting five individuals in Kamrup district. Authorities disclosed details of the operation on Thursday.
This action was a collaborative effort between Kamrup police and the Assam Special Task Force, based on specific intelligence.
During the operation, a bus arriving from a neighboring state was intercepted in the outskirts of Guwahati, in Amingaon. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 2.5 kilograms of heroin and 8 kilograms of opium, concealed inside the bus.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news of this operation on the social media platform X, praising the police teams involved. He stated, “A substantial quantity of drugs has been seized in Assam. The joint action by Kamrup police and STF has resulted in the recovery of drugs worth ₹21.36 crore. A bus coming from a neighboring state was stopped in Amingaon, where 2.5 kilograms of heroin and 8 kilograms of opium were found. Five individuals have been arrested.”
Police sources indicated that the arrested individuals are being interrogated to determine the origin of the drugs and their intended destination, as well as to investigate connections to an interstate trafficking network.
Authorities suspect that these drugs may be part of a larger smuggling network operating in the northeastern region.
This seizure is part of the Assam government’s “Assam Against Drugs” initiative, which has been launched by the state administration.
In recent years, Assam police and other agencies have conducted numerous operations against drug traffickers and gangs in the state.
Senior police officials stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests may occur.
