Baghdad, May 15: Iraq’s new Prime Minister Ali Al-Jaidi has taken the oath of office with an incomplete cabinet. Lawmakers have yet to reach an agreement on key positions, including the Ministries of Interior and Defense, delaying decisions on these critical roles.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the parliament approved 14 members of Al-Jaidi’s cabinet, while voting on the remaining ministries will occur later due to ongoing political negotiations.
During a session chaired by Speaker Haibat Al-Halbousi, 266 lawmakers voted in favor of the 14 ministers. Among those approved is Fuad Hussein, who retains his position as Foreign Minister. Additionally, Mohammad Khudair has been appointed as Oil Minister, and Faleh Al-Sari has been named Finance Minister.
Iraq’s constitution mandates that any Prime Minister must secure parliamentary approval for their cabinet and government program before officially assuming office.
On April 27, Iraq’s President Nizar Amadi nominated Al-Jaidi for the Prime Minister position. Al-Jaidi enjoys the support of the “Coordination Framework,” the largest coalition in parliament, which includes Shia parties.
According to the constitution, a nominated Prime Minister has 30 days to present their cabinet and government program to parliament to gain a vote of confidence.
Since 2003, Iraq has operated under a power-sharing arrangement, designating the presidency to the Kurdish community, the speakership to Sunni Muslims, and the Prime Ministership to Shia Muslims.
Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Ali Al-Jaidi on his nomination as Iraq’s next Prime Minister. He described it as a significant step toward forming a new government in Baghdad and expressed hope for stronger relations between the two nations.
In a social media post, Trump stated, “Congratulations to Ali Al-Jaidi on being nominated as Iraq’s next Prime Minister.” He expressed optimism that the new government would address security and administrative challenges.
Trump added, “We hope he will establish a new government that is free from terrorism and can provide a better future for the Iraqi people.” He also noted that under Al-Jaidi’s leadership, U.S.-Iraq relations could strengthen further.
According to Trump, “We are looking forward to a strong, active, and very positive relationship between Iraq and the United States.” He characterized this development as the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries, one that promises prosperity, stability, and success.
