New Delhi, May 15: At the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting held under India’s presidency, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reflected on the organization’s 20-year journey, its achievements, and future direction. He emphasized that the session, themed “BRICS-20: Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability,” brought together member countries and partner nations.
Jaishankar stated that considering the experiences of the past two decades, the discussion today centers on the nature of our cooperation and its future trajectory. The presence of partner countries has strengthened our collective efforts and deepened our engagement. By leveraging our collective strength, we can make BRICS more robust, agile, and adaptable to changing circumstances. Over time, both the scope and significance of BRICS have increased, reflecting the aspirations of emerging economies and developing nations for a more balanced and inclusive international order. In response to evolving global conditions, BRICS has expanded both its agenda and membership while maintaining a focus on human development and practical cooperation.
He noted that the journey of BRICS over the last two decades has been significant. Institutions like the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement exemplify our capacity to create reliable alternatives. Our collaboration spans various sectors, including digital technology, information, agriculture, health, energy, and innovation. India’s approach has always been to make BRICS more accessible and beneficial to its people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also articulated that we view BRICS as a platform for “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability,” with a particular emphasis on “Humanity First” and the priorities of the Global South.
Jaishankar outlined four key priorities: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability, which provide a practical framework for partnership and collaboration. Resilience involves strengthening supply chains, diversifying markets, improving early warning systems, and developing climate-resilient infrastructure. Initiatives like digital integration for social welfare showcase our strong focus on people’s well-being. Innovation is being fostered through initiatives such as the BRICS Incubator Network, Scientists and Research Repository, and Youth Startup Platform, which create new opportunities. Cooperation is evident in grassroots initiatives like the BRICS MSME Connect Portal, Trade Receivables Discounting System, and partnerships in agriculture and health, which yield tangible results. Sustainability remains a priority, focusing on climate action, clean energy, and sustainable development pathways.
The Minister asserted that the world has changed, and BRICS must evolve as well. It should not merely be a platform for discussion but a results-oriented entity. Our significance will be determined not just by intentions but by outcomes. The more we connect with our societies and their aspirations, the more BRICS will grow in importance. India reaffirms its commitment to strengthening BRICS based on principles of international understanding, unity, openness, inclusivity, full consultation, and consensus. The true strength of BRICS lies in its independence and diversity. The world views us as a force for change and reform. We exemplify a multipolar world. As the global focus shifts towards risk reduction and increasing options, we provide more alternatives. Our approach to international relations is rooted in mutual respect and the equal sovereignty of all nations. This spirit was evident in our meetings and various bilateral discussions, sending a strong message to the world.
