New Delhi, May 5: Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman is set to embark on a three-day visit to China. Beijing anticipates that this trip will further strengthen bilateral relations.
Chinese Ambassador to India, Shuo Fei Hong, shared this information via social media. Rahman is traveling at China’s invitation, where he is expected to meet with prominent figures.
Hong stated on social media, “At the invitation of Wang Yi, a member of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau and Foreign Minister, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalidur Rahman will visit China from May 5 to 7.”
Hong expressed confidence that China highly values its relationship with Bangladesh and is eager about the visit. Beijing hopes to enhance bilateral ties with the new Bangladeshi government and strengthen the China-Bangladesh “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.”
Earlier, Beijing made a significant announcement regarding this visit. According to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry, Rahman will commence his trip on Tuesday at the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
This will be Rahman’s third bilateral foreign visit since the formation of the new government by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in February.
China and Bangladesh upgraded their relationship to a “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership” in 2024. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated, “China and Bangladesh have long been friends and close neighbors.”
The bilateral relationship has seen “consistent and stable progress, yielding tangible results for both peoples,” and Beijing places “great importance” on its ties with Dhaka.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry also issued a statement detailing key aspects of the visit. It noted that Foreign Minister Khalidur will meet with Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Additionally, Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, will host a luncheon in Rahman’s honor. Rahman’s high-level delegation includes Humayun Kabir, advisor on foreign affairs to the Prime Minister, and Chaudhry Ashik Mahmood Bin Harun, Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority.
For 15 years, China has remained Bangladesh’s largest trading partner. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Beijing has stated that this visit is expected to strengthen political trust, foster collaboration across various sectors, promote the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and further enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
