Jaipur, May 14: The Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has detained a police officer accused of soliciting bribes during a rape case investigation. Officials disclosed this information on Thursday.
The ACB apprehended Praveen Kumar Charan, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Dholapani in Pratapgarh district, based on a complaint. The complaint alleged that he demanded a bribe in exchange for providing relief to the brother of the rape case complainant.
According to Govind Gupta, the Director General of ACB, the Dungarpur unit received a complaint claiming that bribes were being solicited in connection with a rape case registered at the Dholapani police station in Pratapgarh district.
The accused officer allegedly requested money in return for assisting the complainant’s brother, which included assurances that the complainant’s father would not be falsely implicated in the case.
Acting on directives from ACB headquarters, the Dungarpur unit conducted an operation on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of Charan, the police inspector and SHO at Dholapani police station.
Gupta stated that the ACB Dungarpur unit received a complaint regarding the solicitation of a bribe from the complainant. Following this, under the supervision of Dr. Rameshwar Singh, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of ACB Udaipur Range, the Dungarpur team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ratan Singh Rajpurohit, executed a sting operation.
During the operation, Charan was stopped while traveling in his personal vehicle. He allegedly accepted the bribe through an acquaintance of the complainant. When the ACB team searched his vehicle at the Nimbahera Highway near the Narsinghpura toll plaza, they recovered ₹287,150 in cash.
When questioned about the recovered amount, Charan could not provide a satisfactory explanation. Consequently, the ACB team took him into custody. Interrogation of the accused and further investigation are currently ongoing under the supervision of Additional Director General (ADG) Smita Srivastava.
The ACB is also searching the accused’s official residence. A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigations are underway.
