London, May 14: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a stern warning to rebellious leaders within the Labour Party following disappointing results in local elections. He cautioned that any leadership challenge against him could plunge the party into “chaos.”
Speculation about attempts to replace Starmer has intensified after the Labour Party’s poor performance in the recent local elections. Amid rising unrest within the party, Starmer urged ministers not to further destabilize the situation.
This warning comes as British media reported that Health Minister Wes Streeting is considering resigning and launching a leadership challenge. According to Xinhua news agency, he will need the support of 81 Labour MPs to become a candidate.
Streeting was seen entering 10 Downing Street on Wednesday morning before leaving less than 20 minutes later, just ahead of the formal opening of Parliament.
Pressure on Starmer has been mounting since last week’s disappointing local election results. On Tuesday, several ministers resigned, while some cabinet members publicly reaffirmed their support for the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, 11 unions affiliated with Labour have issued a joint statement urging the party to prepare for a leadership change. The statement read, “It is clear that the Prime Minister will not lead the Labour Party into the next election. A plan for electing a new leader must be devised soon.”
Additionally, the Scottish National Party has threatened to bring a vote of no confidence against Starmer, asserting that this leadership spectacle cannot continue for much longer.
Earlier, King Charles III delivered the “King’s Speech,” outlining Prime Minister Starmer’s legislative agenda for the new parliamentary session. However, the escalating crisis within the Labour Party and questions surrounding Starmer’s future have overshadowed the government’s policy plans.
