Asaduddin Owaisi Criticizes Citizenship Review Process in West Bengal

New Delhi, April 1: AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi sharply criticized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in West Bengal on Wednesday. He emphasized that citizenship verification does not fall under the purview of the Election Commission of India (ECI) but is the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Speaking to reporters in West Bengal, Owaisi stated, “We oppose the SIR. Our writ petition on this matter is still pending in the Supreme Court. Citizenship does not come under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission but rather under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs.”

Owaisi also highlighted the delays in publishing the voter lists in West Bengal, stressing the urgent need to finalize the names of voters in the adjudication list. He pointed out that administrative delays could pose significant obstacles in the ongoing elections, mentioning that there are several names in the decision list that need to be finalized as soon as possible. “Elections have already begun, and this delay is causing serious issues that need to be addressed,” he added.

On Wednesday, the AIMIM leader arrived in Kolkata to address a public meeting in Murshidabad, marking the launch of the party’s campaign for the state assembly elections.

The AIMIM is contesting the elections in alliance with Humayun Kabir’s ‘Jan Unnayan Party’, and both leaders are scheduled to speak at the rally. This coalition aims to strengthen their presence in the state and mobilize voters ahead of the elections.

In its first electoral contest in West Bengal, AIMIM will contest eight assembly seats, focusing on three each in Birbhum and Murshidabad, and two in Malda, particularly targeting constituencies with a significant Muslim population.

The party has expressed concerns over the lack of development in Muslim-majority districts like Malda and Murshidabad, highlighting high unemployment rates that have forced many young residents to migrate. They have also criticized the state government for inadequate infrastructure in higher education and healthcare, claiming these shortcomings have adversely affected local communities.
